Translink Proud to Support Lurgan Show

Translink is acting as a key sponsor of this year’s Lurgan Show, helping to support this major event in the agricultural calendar.

The event will be held in Lurgan Park on Saturday 1st June, with all classes of agriculture on display.

This sponsorship is a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of our ongoing Lurgan Area Track Renewal (LATR) project, which will include the renewal of over 1.7km of track between the William Street level crossing in the town to a point beyond Bell’s Row level crossing.  This work will necessitate a four-week full closure of the railway line at Lurgan this summer, running from Friday 26 July-Friday 23 August inclusive.

Translink is working with the local community, elected representatives and statutory bodies to ensure that this major programme of works will be carried out with minimal disruption to the local community.

The show also coincides with the beginning of Bus and Train Week, Translink’s annual celebration of public transport across Northern Ireland.  Now in its’ fourth year, Bus and Train Week is a highlight in the Translink calendar, a Northern Ireland-wide celebration of our bus and train services, with promotional fares available across all services.

Visitors can travel to and from the Lurgan Show using Translink’s Family and Friends ticket, offering unlimited one-day travel for up to 2 adults and 4 children (minimum 1 adult and 1 child) for £22.  This farte is available all day on Saturdays and Sundays and during main school holidays.  Local visitors can travel by bus from Portadown with a £2.50 off-peak return fare.

Allan Stewart, Translink’s Project Manager for the Lurgan Area Track Renewal Project, said: ‘‘From the outset of this project, Translink has been proactively engaging with the wider community in Lurgan to explain the importance of these essential works in keeping the rail line safe for the Lurgan community and maintaining overall performance.

‘‘We want to leave a lasting legacy in the area and have welcomed the opportunity to support a range of local cross community events.

‘‘Key amongst these is the Lurgan Show, a popular date in the local agricultural calendar.  Translink is proud to sponsor this annual event, helping to showcase the Lurgan community at its best, as well as providing a valuable opportunity for Translink to promote the forthcoming works and our regular key safety messages – I’d encourage all visitors to the Lurgan Show on 1st June to call with the Translink stand and learn more about what we’re doing in the area.

‘‘We have welcomed support from the vast majority of local people right across the Lurgan community and forged some great partnerships with local community organisations.  We want to build on these relationships, deliver the important community projects and ensure the successful completion of the track upgrade works this summer.

“I would ask for the continued support of the local community as we move forward, particularly during the main construction works between 26th July and 23rd August.’’

Michele Doran, representing the Lurgan Show, said: ‘‘We are delighted to have the support of Translink for this year’s Lurgan Show.  The 2019 event, our 107th annual show, promises to be bigger and better than ever, and we’re glad to have Translink in attendance in order to promote the forthcoming railway works in Lurgan, as well as other aspects of their work.

‘‘The Lurgan Show is one of the oldest and most prestigious agricultural events in Northern Ireland and has always been a forum where all sections of our community, from Lurgan and beyond, can come together.  Working with Translink, we hope to continue to show Lurgan at its very best this summer - we’re grateful for the support of Translink and would encourage anyone who can to travel to the show via public transport.’’
